Finally! Your braces are off and your smile is looking beautiful, straight, and best of all, metal-free. Was that a journey or what?
We are so happy for you, and even though the biggest part of your journey is done, we’re still in this together to make sure those results last a lifetime. To keep your smile looking its best, you’ll need to wear a retainer to help everything stay stable and settled.
Why retainers matter
You’re excited to be done with treatment. Who wouldn’t be? The thing is, teeth have a little bit of a "memory" and might try to shift back to where they used to be. To help: Retainers. They hold your teeth in their new, correct spots while your gums and bone get used to the change. Think of it as the finishing touch on all your hard work.
Finding the right retainer for you
Every person is unique, so we’ll work together to pick the retainer that fits your life. Healthy smiles are created through our thoughtful treatment approach, even after the braces come off.
- Traditional removable retainers (sometimes called a “Hawley,” after the amazing orthodontist who invented them, Charley Hawley): These have a metal wire and a cozy acrylic arch. They are great because they can be adjusted easily if we need to do any tiny "fine-tuning" for your front teeth.
- Vivera™ Retainers: These look just like Invisalign® aligners. They are practically invisible and a favorite for those who want a more discreet look.
- Fixed retainers: These are little wires bonded right behind your teeth. They stay in place so you don't ever have to worry about losing them or remembering how many hours to wear them.

Tips for your new routine
We want your journey to be as easy as possible. Here’s a little "friend-to-friend" advice on keeping things simple:
Don't lose it: Removable retainers love to go missing in napkins at restaurants. And the stories you hear about dogs loving them? All strangely true. If it’s not in your face, keep it in its case!
Extra love for fixed wires: If we go with a fixed retainer, you’ll need to use floss threaders to keep the space between the wire and your teeth nice and clean.
Eat what you want: The best part about removable retainers? You can take them out to enjoy all the snacks you missed while wearing braces.

Are retainers painful?
They might feel a little snug when you first get them, but they shouldn't hurt. If something feels off, come see us and we’ll make it right.
