Giving your child’s smile a healthy start

As a parent, you want the very best for your child, and that includes a healthy, happy smile. You might be wondering why children should see an orthodontist so early, or what the difference is between early care and regular braces. We’re here for you and your family to help figure that out together.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first checkup by age seven — and we agree. At this age, we can see how the permanent teeth are starting to come in and how the jaw is growing.

Most of the time, we’ll just keep an eye on things while they grow. But sometimes, starting a "Phase One" treatment around age eight or nine can help correct jaw growth or bite issues, like an underbite. This early step makes room for permanent teeth to arrive properly and often means less complicated work when they are older.

Every child’s journey is unique, but here are a few things you can look for at home:

  • Losing baby teeth very early or very late
  • Having a hard time chewing or biting into food
  • Breathing mostly through the mouth
  • Thumb-sucking that continues after age five
  • Top and bottom teeth that don't meet normally
  • Crowded front teeth around age seven or eight

Orthodontic issues like crowding, gaps, or protruding teeth can be inherited, but they can also come from mouth injuries or early tooth loss.

Healthy smiles are created through our thoughtful treatment approach. By checking things early while the jaw is still growing, we can often avoid more difficult treatments — like tooth extractions or surgery — later in life. We want your child’s journey to be as easy and comfortable as possible.

Does my child need a referral from a dentist?

Nope! While we love when local dentists send new friends our way, you can call us directly to schedule your child’s exam.

Will my child get braces at age seven?

Not necessarily. Most children just join our observation club so we can monitor their growth. If they do need help, we’ll talk through the best types of braces or appliances together.

How much does early treatment cost?

We know financial information is a big part of the plan. We’ll sit down and find a way to make it fit your family’s budget. We work with most insurance plans, too, so we can help keep that out-of-pocket cost nice and manageable.
